Function & Events Manager

Larnach Castle is an award-winning visitor attraction in Dunedin which has a variety of product including tours, accommodation, food & beverage and function business.

Being New Zealand’s only Castle it provides an amazing work environment, remarkable history and is set within internationally recognised gardens and grounds.

The function and events department is one of our key revenue areas which due to the public profile and local attendance to many of our events, makes a significant contribution to Larnach Castle’s ongoing business reputation. A key challenge in managing this department is to understand the wider business picture of Larnach Castle being a major visitor attraction and the seasonal constraints and limitations that this places on the function departments activities.

We are seeking an individual who thrives on working in a fast-paced environment, someone who has exceptional organisational skills but also has an eye for detail.

The position reports directly to the General Manager and the candidate must have previous experience in the tourism or hospitality industry in a management role.

Key activities:

  • To handle initial function enquiries, client interviews and reply promptly to all kinds of enquiries regarding potential functions
  • To market the facilities at Larnach Castle for functions, events, conferences and weddings, and be innovative and pro-active in suggesting new possibilities
  • To deliver first class service through event coordination
  • To develop and maintain excellent client relationships to achieve repeat business and referral business
  • To prepare accounts immediately after each function and ensure these are entirely accurate and checked carefully before sending to clients
  • To maintain regular stock control of all beverages for functions and other Castle departments. This also involves ordering, stock-taking and signing off all invoices
  • To be a vital contributor to the management team at Larnach Castle; presenting at management meetings and being involved in joint decision making and liaison with all other managers and Heads of Departments.
  • To work with the Head chef in the preparation of menus and costing which reflect seasonality and the availability, within agreed cost parameters
