Job Description

Te Papa stands proud as an iconic national building housing the treasures of the nation and is a vibrant destination for both national and international visitors. Biculturalism is a founding philosophy and practice of Te Papa designed to explore the contribution of Māori language and culture to the life, culture and activities of the museum in small and large ways. Te Papa fosters and nurtures cross-cultural capability, the ability of people of different cultural backgrounds to interact with one another in positive and uplifting ways. Te Papa’s vision is to be a Tiriti based museum, where a collective commitment to Tiriti o Waitangi is fostered and Māori exercise tino rangatiratanga.

We are looking for a self-motivated, high-energy candidate who can lead, develop and implement an events strategy for Te Papa, explore commercial business development opportunities, deliver amazing and well managed Events through others and lead and manage a small team of professionals. You will be a strategic leader supporting the development and operational delivery of events, managing operational and administrative functions which grows Te Papa’s audiences and revenue making opportunities, in collaboration with a wide variety or internal and external stakeholders.

To be successful in the role, you’ll bring:

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in event management and strategic development, event business development and event delivery.
  • A skilled strategic thinker – one who develops and builds out ideas to secure support and buy-in
  • Innovative and creative– proven experience in ideation, creation and delivery for audience and revenue growth
  • Demonstrated ability to design and deliver an events programme that will grow audience diversity, particularly with Te Papa’s priority Māori and Pasifika audiences
  • At least 5 years’ proven ability to manage, lead, motivate and develop a small team
  • An understanding of Te Papa’s bicultural philosophy and the partnership approach set out in Te Tiritī o Waitangi
  • Excellent relationship management skills including proven experience developing relationships, engaging with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, and contract negotiation ability
  • Hands-on event delivery experience: excellent project management and team leadership skills, ability to adapt to a fast-moving environment and make and communicate clear and confident decisions
  • Proven ability to work in a collaborative manner, bringing the best ideas from all involved to the table and emphasising mutually satisfactory outcomes
