PRESS RELEASE: Destination Coromandel
The strength and depth of The Coromandel Tourism Industry has been recognised at the second annual Showcase Awards, hosted by Destination Coromandel.
Tourism operators from around the region, plus i-SITE staff and Hauraki District council representatives met at the Tairua Marina Bar and Grill for a marketing workshop, prior to the awards presentation on Thursday.
Hadley Dryden, General Manager of Destination Coromandel gave an overview of the latest data which shows continued growth in visitor numbers and spend above the national average. Hadley also presented some new analysis that reveals unrealised potential for spend growth.
Recognition for excellent Service Quality based on national TripAdvisor Top 10 rankings went to: Ocean Leopard Tours, Glass Bottom Boat, Sunlover Retreat, Bayview at 91 and Tatahi Lodge.
TripAdvisor rankings were selected as the service benchmark by Destination Coromandel because they are based on independent traveller reviews and a consistent and outstanding level of service is required to achieve a national ranking.
It is exciting to see so many Coromandel businesses achieving a Top 10 ranking, demonstrating that a business doesn’t have to be a large corporate entity to be a star in visitors’ New Zealand experience. The Product Development Awards went to Hot Water Beach Top 10 Holiday
The Product Development Awards went to Hot Water Beach Top 10 Holiday Park and Pedlars Motel, both recognised in the recent Hauraki Coromandel Business Awards.
The Industry Showcase Special Award, which is the supreme award given to an individual who has shown outstanding commitment, passion and leadership to the tourism industry in The Coromandel, this year went to Doug Johansen, from Kiwi Dundee Adventures.
As the pioneer of Nature Tourism in New Zealand, Doug has been guiding visitors on hikes and walks in The Coromandel and around the country since 1975. Doug has dedicated his life to nature conservation and education, receiving a Queen’s Medal for services in education and tourism, and winning the title “Kiwi Dundee” in a nationwide competition in 1988.
Doug has an ability to enthuse people from all walks of life, all ages and nationalities, with his knowledge of and passion for New Zealand flora and fauna. Together with partner Jan Poole (also a recipient of a Queen’s Service Medal), Doug has played a crucial role in opening up The Coromandel to the international travel trade, and to this day, a Kiwi Dundee Adventure is the epitome of The Coromandel experience.
The assembled group was enthralled by guest speaker Russell Alexander from Hobbiton Move Set, describing the transformation of a quiet Matamata farm into “The Shire™” of The Hobbit movie trilogy fame, and the marketing strategy behind the highly successful Hobbiton Movie Set Tours.
The Coromandel Annual Tourism Industry Showcase provides a platform to publicly acknowledge stand-out operators among their peers. An industry comprised of bold enterprising men, women and families who invest their money and most of their time in building vibrant businesses. Ventures that enrich our communities in this beautiful place we call home and sustain The Coromandel to be truly good for your soul.
