General Manager – Waimangu Volcanic Valley

About us

Waimangu Volcanic Valley is one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most unique visitor experiences – the world’s youngest geothermal system, formed following the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. Set within an extraordinary natural environment, Waimangu brings together geothermal wonders, native flora and fauna, and the authentic cultural narratives of Tūhourangi.

Owned through a 50/50 partnership between Tūhourangi Tribal Authority and Te Puia NZMACI Limited Partnership (trading as Te Puia), Waimangu is entering an exciting period of growth and opportunity. With strong foundations, committed owners, and a clear vision for the future, this is a rare opportunity to shape the next chapter of an iconic tourism destination.

We are seeking an experienced and values-led General Manager to provide strategic, commercial and operational leadership as Waimangu continues to grow and evolve. Reporting to the Board Chair, with a dotted line to the CEO of Te Puia, you will lead all aspects of the business, from visitor experience and financial performance to people and culture, stakeholder relationships, health and safety, and environmental stewardship.

About you

We are seeking a leader who takes genuine ownership of their work and is passionate about the role Waimangu plays for its owners, stakeholders, employees and visitors.

You’ll be a capable and authentic leader with:

  • Experience leading, or making a significant contribution to the leadership of, a tourism, visitor experience or similar business.
  • Strong commercial and financial management capability.
  • Experience working with Boards and governance structures.
  • A proven ability to lead, develop and inspire teams.
  • Demonstrable experience building and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders, partners, owners and governance bodies.
  • An appreciation for tikanga Māori and a commitment to ongoing learning.

Most importantly, you’ll be someone who can balance commercial success with care for people, place and culture.

Why Join Us?

This is an opportunity to influence strategy, grow the business, develop new opportunities, and help shape the future of one of New Zealand’s most remarkable natural and cultural destinations.

If you’re excited by the opportunity to make an impact, we’d love to hear from you.

Click here to apply online now, or email ••••@tepuia.com if you’d like more information.

Applications close on Wednesday 12 August, so we encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible.
