Govt wage subsidy – which operators got the most?

20th April 2020 By Staff Reporter | news@tourismticker.com | @tourismticker

Payouts for the Government’s wage subsidy scheme neared $10bn by the end of last week as businesses from across the country seek support during the Covid-19 crisis.

Applicants included hundreds of tourism operators, many of whom are grappling with a drop in revenue of 100% as a result of strict border closures, followed by the level four lockdown.

With the subsidy scheme a lifeline for many companies desperate to stay in business and keep staff during these unprecedented times, the Ticker takes a look at the government’s searchable database to get a feel for the support the largest tourism-related operators have secured.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of the large operators that have accessed the scheme – the public database is searchable only by individual business names and, depending on corporate structure, applications may have been made through various trading companies and subsidiaries.

Many hotel groups, for example, have applied under their individual properties and large operators like Air New Zealand have significant partnerships that have also been granted support.
